Rating: Using FIAs ratings: Not Naughty
Possible Spoilers/Warnings: I rated it "Not Naughty" but it's hard for me to rate. Usually I right explicitly nc-17, or completely not. There is a scene where Ginny is in lingerie, (no descriptions) and Draco sees her.
Author's Note: First, serious apologies. I almost completely forgot about the challenge. Until I saw the extension. Second, because that left me with a week to write, it’s pretty crappy. I know it’s pretty crappy, and you have no idea how badly I feel about that. Third, I really tried to get elements requested in the prompt in. I don’t feel like it’s really a fight in here… but there could be one in the future. Fourth, I feel that this is very much unfinished. Almost like a teaser. And, if the teaser is enough to whet your appetite, I will be happy to finish it - and will even give myself a deadline to do so. Lastly, HUGE thanks to my beta, Sherylyn who is so not a Draco/Ginny shipper but took time out of her canon-ships to beta this story on extremely short notice.
Summary: Ginny needs a job. Draco has one. What happens next?
In the corner of the dark pub, Draco sat brooding. Once again, he had failed to produce, and his benefactors were becoming increasingly restless with his progress. His only job was to find the one: the face of Gladrags.
Ever since leaving school and venturing out on his own, he was convinced he could sell anything. His first opportunity to do so came just before the end of seventh year, when the wizarding world was on the brink of the greatest battle ever fought. He sold his associates — Crabbe and Goyle — on the idea that they would win the Great War. Deep down, Draco had had more faith in Harry Potter than he had cared to admit, but he had felt it. And, despite their lack of intelligence, Crabbe and Goyle were fully convinced of their assured victory.
After that, he had many great ideas. Of all places, Draco ventured most often into Muggle London. There he found the Muggles employing models, and advertising, as well as jingles and catchy phrases. All this, he discovered, just to make a sale. Draco was convinced he could sell anything using similar tactics to the Muggles. And he would, of course, be the last one to admit using Muggle tactics, but that’s exactly what he did. And the first sale he made was to get himself hired by Twillfit and Tattings. He convinced them that he could find a single witch or wizard to represent their clothing line.
Ginny Weasley was feeling mopey. There was just no other word for it. ”I feel mopey today, George.” She couldn’t explain it, and she couldn’t make the feeling go away. She was neither happy, nor sad. She wasn’t teary, but just… blah.
George looked at his sister, unable to determine what was going on with her. It was an odd feeling for him to be confused when it came to Ginny. George had always been able to determine, with a single glance, just what Ginny needed, whether it be a joke, a prank, a meal…
On this day, he was having difficulty and found himself in unfamiliar territory. ”What are your plans for today?” was really the only question that came to mind.
“I have an interview.”
“Well, good luck, then. What type of—”
“Thanks. I don’t want to say too much about it, because I’m feeling a bit indifferent about the whole thing already.”
Ginny had been on interviews before. There was the time she met with Luna’s dad to be a reporter for The Quibbler. Definitely not the right job for her. There was also the time her dad had got her an interview at the Ministry with the head of the Department of Magical Transportation. That was a disaster.
This interview was different. She had been having lunch with Luna the other day in Hogsmeade and a strange woman had come up to her to ask if she’d ever done any modeling. She continued by saying that she worked for someone who represented big companies who would pay big money for fresh faces.
Ginny didn’t really think much of it, except that Luna pointed out that Ginny being out of work was really not the least bit ideal, as the kerflufflenerglings were starting to disappear with all of Luna’s money.
With that, Ginny agreed to meet the man with all the connections.
Draco arrived at the arranged meeting place, the Three Broomsticks, early. He wanted to observe as his prey entered the room. And that’s exactly what it felt like to him… like he was waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting young thing, to be paid very little to do… well, he wasn’t really sure.
He knew her as soon as she walked in the door. When his assistant had given him her name, he recognized it immediately. She had been the younger sister of one of his most hated adversaries. Of course, that was all in the past, and he was on a job now. He expected that this would be an easy close. After all, the Weasleys weren’t known for their extensive wealth. Still, it could be fun.
“Well, look who it is!”
“Out of my way, Malfoy! I’m not in the mood for your attitude.”
The years had been kind to him, she thought. But then, it’s only been three years. She shook her head. She couldn’t afford to let her wandering thoughts distract her. She wished she had taken the name of the person she was meeting.
“My, my. We must be busy, today.”
She just turned away from him, but his eyes were still on her. she could feel it.
“Meeting someone for lunch? Or maybe a midday tryst?”
Ginny continued to ignore the voice. She could hear the smirk she detested.
“Or perhaps,” he paused, ”you’re here for an interview with DME Inc.?”
She spun around quickly, nearly losing her balance. But Draco was there, steadying her, and helping her into a seat.
“I’ve taken the liberty to order a gillywater with lime for you. If you prefer something different, we can let the server know when he returns.”
“No. It’s fine.”
Ginny sat down, carefully weighing her options. Should she follow through with this interview? Or should she just walk away? She could hear Luna’s voice in her head. ”Oh, you’re working with Draco Malfoy now? That must be very nice. I hear he is very handsome, still. At least you have someone pleasant to look at all day long.” Well, she would hear him out, see what he had to say.
“Ginny, you seem very suspicious. I assure you, this is all on the up and up. My client seeks a representative, and I actually think you might be perfect for the job.”
“Who is your client and what’s the job?”
“My client is looking for a model. Someone to be the fresh new face of their products.”
“Just what exactly is involved in being their ‘representative’?”
“Well, there would be photo shoots, new clothing — all top of the line.”
“What does the job pay?”
“Well, now, it’s really to a lot, but I am guessing, and I truly mean no offense here, that it is still quite a bit more than you are currently earning.”
Ginny had no idea if Draco knew she was out of work, but anything was quite a bit more than she was currently earning.
“A number, Malfoy. How much?”
Draco was authorized to offer up to 1000 Galleons a week, but he didn’t think it would take that much. And maybe, if he saved them money, they would recommend him to other businesses, and he would be well on his way to some riches.
“How does 500 Galleons a week sound?”
“To have my picture taken?” Ginny was taken aback. It seemed awfully high, and she wasn’t quite sure this felt legit. ”Draco, are you for real? That seems ridiculously high for having a few pictures taken.”
Deep down, Ginny thought the money was good, and could help with a number of things. But could she do it?
“Well, it IS more than just pictures. There will be appearances, and presentations. You’ll be a celebrity, Ginny.”
“You are unique, Ginny. And if I can get you signed on, T&T will be my calling card for new business. I’m not going to lie… YOU will be my new calling card.”
Ginny looked him over thoughtfully. Truth be told, she wanted the job; she needed the job. And working with Draco Malfoy to start out wasn’t entirely bad. As Luna-in-her-head had said, he was pleasant to look at.
“I guess I’ll take it.”
“You guess?” Draco chuckled.
Weeks passed, and Ginny’s face was plastered all over wizarding England. Ginny had managed not only a civil working relationship, but an almost friendly one, with Draco Malfoy.
Former classmates reported seeing them together in book shops and cafés. While the society pages reported Draco with A-listers, they reported Ginny moving in circles she never would have expected to be. They both looked happy, but neither one felt particularly satisfied.
Her employer announced their latest line… lingerie for the witches in love. During meetings about the new product, Ginny realized she would be expected to model these new items.
“Draco!” Ginny shouted upon arriving at his front door. She knocked loudly until he opened the door.
“What on earth are you doing, woman? You’ll wake my neighbors, and I quite like it here!!!”
“Did you know about this? About the fact that T&T would expect me to dress in next to nothing???”
“Well, they mentioned a new line. I hardly expected something like this.”
The minute the words left his lips, he knew it sounded too well-rehearsed. What could he say? He knew all along they were gearing up for a lingerie line. He also knew that no one he knew would ever model lingerie.
“Just what made you think I’d be willing to do this?”
“500 Galleons a week. That’s what.”
Ginny stormed out, and quickly Apparated to the flat she shared with Luna.
“Lingerie!!!” she shrieked at her friend. “I’m supposed to model lingerie!!”
“Well, Ginny, at least you can pull it off.”
“I don’t want to pull it off. I want to keep it on. All on.”
“Maybe this is your opportunity, then. Get Draco to bring Harry, Ron and Hermione back.”
“From Siberia? It’ll never work. What power does he have over the sentencing board?”
“But, Ginny, they never should have been sentenced in the first place. Make him use his influence to convince the board they are wrong.”
Ginny considered this. When the Golden Trio had been sentenced to a lifetime in Siberia for espionage and treason, Ginny’s life fell apart. In the four years since the Great Battle, with them gone, it was all she and her family could do to get over the losses. The only way to bring them back was to pay for passage. She and George had been working hard ever since to save the money to be able to do that.
“Well, I suppose I could try.”
Her first day of shooting with the new line, left Ginny cold and unfeeling. They put her in a classy camisole with matching shorts. These were made of finest silk, but she still felt uncomfortable.
She had no man in her life and so felt very much like it wasn’t really her. Draco had stopped by the set to see how she was doing, and was stunned by her red hair cascading over the green silk.
As soon as there was a break, she put on a dressing gown and walked over to Draco.
“Well? What do you want, Draco?”
“I came to see how this was working out for you.” There was genuine concern in his voice, but she couldn’t hear it.
“It’s fine. I want you to renegotiate my contract. I don’t get paid enough to wear this little.”
“I don’t know if I can do that… ”
“You can. And you will.”
“I’ll see what I can do.”
Draco was still having a hard time getting over how beautiful she looked. He glanced around the room, at all the marketing and all the ads that were plastered with Ginny in T&T robes and clothing. Every single one of them was more beautiful than the last, and he’d never noticed before. But an odd sensation began in the pit of his stomach.
Ginny finished the shoot, and Draco was still there.
“I’m famished. Can we go eat?”
Dinner was a quiet affair. She had a lot on her mind. He had a lot of her on his mind. She didn’t look UNhappy, but she certainly wasn’t happy. And he just wanted to wrap his arms around her, but he didn’t dare.
“What’s wrong, Ginny?”
“You can’t fool me, Ginny. Tell me what’s wrong.”
“I would like to believe you.”
“So, believe me.”
“Draco—” Ginny began. This was not going to be easy. “Draco, do you have any connections at the Sentencing Board?”
“The Sentencing Board?”
“The Sentencing Board.”
“I know one or two wizards over there. Why?”
“I want you to get my brother back.”
“Your brother? What’s he got to do with the Sentencing Board?”
“And Harry and Hermione.”
“Good Lord, Ginny! What did they do to piss off the Sentencing Board?”
“They were sentenced for espionage and treason.”
Draco let out a low whistle. He recalled all the crazy running around they did trying to save the world from Lord Voldemort. He didn’t realize that even though the Death Eaters were the bad guys, Harry, Ron and Hermione had been sentenced as well.
“Why should I?”
“Because you are the only person I know who can.”
“But they don’t mean anything to me, Ginny. All they have ever been to me is a thorn in my side.”
“But it’s my brother.”
“But nothing. What do you expect me to do? Bring him back here so we can have a loving reunion and celebrate all the good times we shared? I don’t think so.”
“Then get me the raise I asked for.”
“I might be able to get you another 500 a week.”
“I want an additional 1000.”
“Geez, Ginny, that’s highway robbery.”
“No. It’s not. Highway robbery is being authorized to offer me 1000 and actually offering only 500. You took advantage of me, Draco.”
“I didn’t. I was authorized, yes. But were you unhappy with the 500 I offered? I didn’t hear any complaints.”
“That’s not the point. If you can’t get their sentences changed, I need to pay their passage back. At 500 a week, that’ll take forever. At 1500 a week, that’ll take less than forever.”
So a couple of comments from the author. First, serious apologies. I almost completely forgot about the challenge. Until I saw the extension. Second, because that left me with a week to write, it’s pretty crappy. I know it’s pretty crappy, and you have no idea how badly I feel about that.
